A significant power outage has swept across major parts of Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), affecting numerous areas including the Presidential Villa. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has confirmed that at least 53 locations experienced a blackout due to technical faults in several of its feeders.

The outage primarily impacted the R4 Injection Sub Station located at Three Arm Zone, Aso Drive, which supplies electricity to the Presidential Villa, the seat of Nigeria’s government. Areas severely affected include the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Kuje, Gwagwalada, and Bwari.

In a statement on its official social media account, the AEDC urged customers to remain patient as its engineers work diligently to restore power to the affected regions. The company has listed several impacted locations, which include residential areas, commercial establishments, and significant landmarks such as Living Faith Church Katampe and the American Embassy Estate.

This incident is part of a troubling trend, as findings reveal that in the past two months, 188 locations in the FCT have suffered from similar outages due to deteriorating infrastructure and technical faults. Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, recently highlighted the urgent need for reforms in the electricity distribution sector, criticizing the companies for neglecting long-term investments in favor of short-term profits.

With the nation’s seat of power now plunged into darkness, the implications of this outage raise serious questions about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure. Residents and businesses alike are feeling the strain, as frequent disruptions have become a common occurrence. The AEDC is under pressure to address these issues swiftly to restore reliability in electricity distribution across the capital.
