Pope Francis Diagnosed with Double Pneumonia Amid Ongoing Health Issues

Pope Francis, aged 88, has been diagnosed with double pneumonia, a development that adds complexity to his already fragile health situation. The Vatican confirmed on Tuesday that tests conducted at Rome’s Gemelli hospital revealed the pontiff’s condition following his admission for a respiratory tract infection that had persisted for over a week.

The recent chest X-ray indicated the onset of bilateral pneumonia, necessitating further pharmacological therapy. The pope is currently receiving antibiotic cortisone treatment to address a previously identified polymicrobial infection, which complicates his therapeutic regimen.

The Vatican’s announcement noted that despite his health challenges, Pope Francis remains in good spirits and continues to engage in his nightly routine of phone calls to the Holy Family church in Gaza. Father Gabriel Romanelli reported that during a recent call, the pope expressed concern for their well-being and offered his blessings.

Due to his health condition, the Vatican has canceled several of Pope Francis’s upcoming commitments, including the Jubilee audience scheduled for Saturday, February 22. A senior church figure has been appointed to celebrate mass on Sunday, and the pope’s general audience for Wednesday has also been called off.

Pope Francis has a history of health issues, including a lung operation in his early twenties and struggles with sciatic nerve pain and knee problems that often require him to use a wheelchair or walking stick. His previous hospitalizations include admissions for bronchitis and pneumonia over the past few years.
