The Benue State Police command has arrested the principal suspect in the alleged murder of late Chief Osita Okoye, the President General of the Amafor Community, Ugbawka, Nkanu East LGA of Enugu state.
Newspot gathered that the suspect, Samuel Nnamani, was arrested over the weekend where he was hiding in Makurdi, Benue State capital.
Nnamani, who is the deputy president general of the community, was alleged to have invited late Okoye for a meeting where he was murdered.
Sources said the suspect escaped from the community to hide in Benue State, but luck ran out of him and he was apprehended.
He was apprehended by members of Igbo community in Benue State, who quickly handed him over to the Benue State Police Command, from where detectives from Enugu State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, picked him up.
A human rights organisation, Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, CRRAN, commended the efforts of the police for the arrest.
The organisation in a statement by its President, Olu Omotayo, in reaction to the arrest on Monday, described the arrest as a “positive development”, adding that they had earlier written on behalf of the Okoye family to the Governor of Enugu State, demanding that justice must be done in respect of this case.
When contacted, the Benue Police Command Spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, who confirmed the arrest, said the suspect had been handed over to the Enugu Police Command.
