Plateau Attack: Police confirms killing of 5 people

Five people have reportedly been killed by unknown gunmen in K/Vom community of Vwang District in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The Plateau State Police Commissioner has also confirmed that yet to be known gunmen attack K/Vom community and killed five persons.

Newspot recalls that the attack is coming barely three days after a traditional ruler, Da Bulus Chuwang Janka, the Acting Gwom Rwey of Foron District was killed in his residence at Rasat, Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of the state by unknown persons.

Newspot gathered that the gunmen who stormed the peaceful community at about 10:30pm on Thursday night shot sporadically on the locals who were relaxing in a relaxation spot after a hectic day.

It was also learned that four people were killed at a relaxation spot, while a student of the School of Animal Health Production Vom, was also killed close to his shop.

According to an eyewitness, the gunmen escaped through some hills around the community.

“After I heard the gunshots and people were crying for help, I was inside my house and I heard the footsteps of the people climbing the hills to go and I didn’t know that they are the perpetrators”, the witness explained.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in the State, Edward Egbuka who confirmed the incident at the scene described it as “a setback to peace effort in the state”.

Egbuka said, “Last night, some yet to be identified gunmen attacked a drinking joint in K/Vom community and shot five persons, we are here and the situation is under control. This is a setback to the peace all stakeholders, the Police Military and state government have been trying to manage here in Plateau”.

Also, reacting to the incident, Member representing Jos South Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Hon. Dalyop Fom described the incident as “ugly and barbaric”.

Fom called on the security agencies to fish out the perpetrators.

The Lawmaker lamented that five members of his constituency were killed and one injured.

“This is a sad moment and time for my peaceful constituents; our people are not happy because we have been having these incidences over and over and we are asking ourselves when will the next one happen”, he decried.

Fom described the people as “hopeless”, and do not know where to run to as the level of insecurity increases on a daily basis and consoled the people to continue to put their trust in God for safety.

While reacting to the attack, the District Head of Vwang, Da Gyang Balak condemned the killings and described it as “unfortunate and barbaric”.

Balak said he was informed about it last night, but sadly, five people were killed, and the perpetrators are yet to be identified.

He called on the community to be calm and remain law-abiding to constituted authorities and pursue their lawful businesses.

The community which is housing the National Veterinary Research Institute Vom (NVIR) and the neighbouring National Institute for Policy and Strategic Study (NIPSS) among other prominent federal agencies has remained in a sober mood since the attack.

Newspot gathered that the youths in the community staged a peaceful protest to demand for more security personnel who will carry out their constitutional responsibility of protecting lives and property.
