The phased demolition of the Ekeoha market in Aba, popularly known as the Shopping centre has commenced, in preparation for the Abia State government’s remodelling project.

The remodelling of the market, according to the Abia State government, is to bring the market to international standards and ensure the safety of traders and their customers as well as open up Aba for more business opportunities.

The first phase of the demolition was started from the decked shops at Ehi Road section on Thursday.

Governor Alex Otti during the official flag of the reconstruction in August, said that original shop owners will not lose their shops after the remodelling exercise.

Otti had assured the traders that the remodelling, which is a Public-Private Partnership, PPP project, will be done in phases to ensure that they are not displaced from business.

But despite the assurance by the Governor, some aggrieved traders led by Chris Uruakpa approached an Aba State High Court presided by Justice C.K Nwankwo calling out the governor over the delay in the remodelling project in suit No: A/M228/2024.

Also, those affected in the first phase of the demolition have appealed for reconstruction of their shopping section in record time, to enable them return to business.
