The Jigawa State Government has begged husbands of women of reproductive age to allow their wives access to modern contraceptives to build healthier families.
State Commissioner for Health Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi Kainuwa made the call while addressing newsmen to commemorate World Contraception Day 2023, on Thursday, at the state secretariat, Dutse. The theme of this year is “Power of Options”.
He said Jigawa is one of the states with the highest maternal death in Nigeria, which can be associated with none or less usage of modern contraceptives.
Kainiwa explained that if there is any immunization against maternal mortality, modern contraceptives are used.
“I see no reason for not allowing our wives to access the immunization as we are allowing our children to be immunized against five killer diseases,” he said.
He stated that modern contraceptives help improve women’s health, reduce maternal morbidity and mortality rates, and increase access to antenatal and postnatal.
“I am therefore encouraging Jigawa state citizens, especially women of childbearing age and their husbands, to make sure they allow their wives to access their rights to build healthy families, society for a brighter future,” Kainiwa said.
He said according to the MIC survey 2022, Jigawa has recorded significant improvement in contraceptive prevalence, with 10.2 per cent also targeted to achieve 30 per cent in 2027.
He urged women to visit any of the available health faces around them to access their services free of charge.
