Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on former player Thiago Alcantara and has ‘no doubts’ about the Liverpool transfer target’s ability to play in the more physical Premier League.

Bayern Munich star Thiago – who was brought to Bavaria by Guardiola – has pulled out of contract renewal talks with the German side and ‘wants to do something new’, according to CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Thiago’s current deal expires next summer, with Bayern prepared to cash in on the Spaniard if they receive an offer of around £36million.

According to Bild, Liverpool are front of the queue for his signature and the 29-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Reds, with Jurgen Klopp eager to add Thiago to his midfield.

Guardiola knows the playmaker well, having handed him his senior debut at Barcelona and then signed him when he first moved to Bayern back in 2013.

While the Manchester City boss made no indication that he would be interested in another reunion, he is confident Thiago has all the ingredients required to be a success in the Premier League.

Asked about the speculation surrounding Thiago and whether he would be able to adapt to English football, Guardiola replied: ‘No doubt about this.

‘A player who plays in Barcelona and Bayern Munich can play in the Premier League. Yeah of course he can play.

‘He’s an exceptional player. But I don’t know what he’s going to do.’

Although Liverpool are at an advanced stage in talks with Thiago, agreeing a fee with Bayern could prove more difficult; while the Bundesliga champions value the midfielder at £36m, Liverpool only want to pay around £22m.

Liverpool already have a host of options in midfield but Klopp feels he is lacking a creative, midfield orchestrator and would love to add Thiago to his ranks to bring a new dimension to the team.
