Pep Guardiola has labelled his Manchester City star Bernardo Silva as the best player in the Premier League after another standout performance and a stunning goal at Aston Villa on Wednesday night.

City beat Villa 2-1 in a competitive contest, which saw Ruben Dias open the scoring before Silva scored a stunning volley to double the visitors’ lead.

Ollie Watkins made things very interesting by cutting the advantage just a couple of minutes into the second half but the champions hung on against Steven Gerrard’s spirited side.

It was Silva’s sublime volley that was the most memorable moment of the match, though, and the 27-year-old has convinced his manager that he is the finest player in the entire division.

‘He is the best, and he was the best three seasons ago when we won the title with 98 points,’ said Guardiola. ‘He has a special ability to do what he wants with the ball.

‘If you watch him two or three seasons ago, you will see the same player you are seeing now. The goal was really good, both the pass and the finish. He is a player on another level, in all senses.’

The victory at Villa Park was also notable for Guardiola as he became the quickest manager in Premier League history to make it to 150 wins in the division.

He took just 204 matches to reach the landmark, an awful lot quicker than his closest rival in those terms, Jose Mourinho, who needed 230 games.

‘The 150 is a good milestone,’ said Guardiola. ‘We’ve done a lot in a short time and we will fight to take good decisions to try to win more.

‘Liverpool are a goal-scoring machine and Chelsea are consistent but we are there, one point behind, not far away. We are performing at a high level.’

Although Silva’s goal was the highlight, Ruben Dias’ strike was a memorable effort as well, especially coming from a centre-back, but he was full of praise for his teammate and the opposition after the win.

‘It is a very important win today way against a team that are on fire under a new manager,’ said Dias. ‘Very important to get the three points. Everyone fought a lot and we are very happy.

‘[Bernardo’s goal was] even more special because it gave us the 2-0 lead. It gave us a little bit of extra confidence into the second half.

‘The game changed when they scored. We have to give them credit because it was a good goal. It changed the game, they went with the crowd, but our team were always there and we were always in control.’
