The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akure South Chapter, on Friday accused the All Progressives Congress, APC, of attacking its members during a ward meeting in Akure, Ondo State capital.
The Secretary of the PDP Caretaker Committee in the local government, Sunday Ogedengbe, disclosed that thugs numbering about 13 invaded the venue of the meeting at Odopetu ward while chanting the campaign slogan of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Ogedengbe stressed that the ugly trend posed a threat to the forthcoming November 16 governorship election in the state.
While urging Aiyedatiwa to rein in his supporters, he narrated that, “the uninvited assailants were shouting the APC governorship candidate’s campaign slogan, ‘Odatiwa, Odirorun,’ before disrupting the peaceful gathering.”
Ogedengbe maintained that further moves by the supporters of APC to unleash any attack on its members would be resisted.
“This incident is both pathetic and despicable, especially from a party claiming to be popular and accepted by the electorate.
“The actions of these miscreants are not only condemnable but also pose a serious threat to the peaceful and credible conduct of free and fair governorship elections in the state,” he added.
However, the Director of Media and Publicity of the APC in the state, Steve Otaloro, who described the allegation as baseless, urged the opposition party to focus on issue-based campaign, adding that the ruling party will never engage in such an act.
While stressing that the APC was committed to peaceful and credible elections, Otaloro said “rather than rushing to judgment, the PDP should allow the police to conclude their investigation, which they themselves initiated. It’s essential to prioritize facts over speculation and political manipulation.”
