Paul Scholes believes former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should be given at least until the end of the season to prove that he can win trophies at Manchester United.

The Red Devils went five games unbeaten at the start of the Premier league season, but have since won just one of their last four matches in all competitions.

That drop in form has led to criticism towards Solskjaer after the club spent more than £100m to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer.

But Scholes believes that the Norwegian boss should be given more time to prove himself at Old Trafford.

‘I think Ole deserves a chance, you think of the last three to four years where United have been, it was shocking before he came. It’s taken two to three years to build a squad where we think the pieces are there to the puzzle, it’s just getting them into the right organisation now,’ he said on Sky Sports’ Overlap forum.

‘I think there was a lot of excitement during the first four or five games, they beat Newcastle, beat Leeds and the last two games have been disappointing.

‘But I think he should be given at least a season to show he can win trophies.

‘You go back to the Europa League final against Villarreal he couldn’t make a sub, his bench was just not good enough. Now I think he could make five or six subs in a game.’

The former Premier League midfielder did however hit out at Solskjaer’s decision to drop Ronaldo from the starting XI for the 1-1 draw against Everton last time out, something which also disappointed former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

‘If you look at the Everton game, I don’t think Manchester United are in a position to rest players, they have to play the best team right from the off,’ Scholes added.

‘Look at City now, they can get away with it, but for this season for Ole you have to feel them coming, you felt City and Liverpool coming [in the past].’

United will look to get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Leicester City on Saturday.
