Paul Scholes has questioned Paul Pogba’s motives for contemplating leaving Manchester United at the end of his current contract.

The France international has just over 12 months remaining on his current deal and talks over an extension have been painstakingly slow from a United perspective, with the Old Trafford giants keen to avoid losing one of their prize assets on a free.

Pogba has shown flashes of his true potential since returning to Old Trafford in the summer of 2017, but a succession of managers have been unable to get the 28-year-old to perform consistently.

Real Madrid have regularly been linked with a move for Pogba in the past while, as recently this week, the mercurial midfielder talked up the possibility of a return to Juventus.

He said: ‘I like Torino [laughs]! I always speak with former Juve team-mates like [Paulo] Dybala. I’m in Manchester now, I’m under contract until June.

‘Then let’s see. I want to complete this season at my best level, then we will see.’

Scholes, however, believes Pogba would be joining a dead league were he to move to Spain and cited only PSG as a potential destination for a player who cost United £89million four years ago.

He told the Webby & O’Neill show: ‘Everybody is a little bit unsure because he doesn’t do it week in and week out. I think there is a big a debate. You’d probably say half of people want him the other half wouldn’t be that bothered if he went.

‘I think the middle of the pitch is a little bit of a problem for us. If he is on song and plays to his ability like he does for France every time he seems to play for them then you’ve got to try and keep him.

‘Why would you want to try and leave England? Real Madrid’s been spoken about, but the Spanish league has gone. Real Madrid and Barcelona are a complete mess.

‘PSG might be the best option but England is the best now. If you look at the top four teams they’ve got all the best players, best managers are here so why would he want to leave? I don’t get that.

‘But again it’s up to the club. If they want to keep him then great, if they don’t we’ll say goodbye.’
