Paul Pogba is on the verge of making his long-awaited Manchester United return and is even in contention to make the matchday squad for Friday’s FA Cup clash with Middlesbrough.

The Frenchman has not played for United since a 2-2 draw against Atalanta in the Champions League on November 2, having been struggling with thigh and calf problems since injuring himself while away on international duty.

But he has returned to full training in recent weeks and was pictured being put through his paces with the rest of the squad, and he could be back out on the pitch imminently.

According to the Daily Mail, manager Ralf Rangnick and his staff are even considering selecting Pogba against Middlesbrough – though they will make a late decision.

The 28-year-old still has not officially been given the green light from the medical team to make his return, but he is ‘very close’ to being ruled fit enough to play.

United intend to take a cautious approach given the long-term nature of Pogba’s injury, but a place on the bench on Friday night has not been ruled out.

Even if he is not risked against Boro, he could be involved against Burnley on Tuesday night in the Premier League or against Southampton the following weekend.

Pogba’s looming return is a significant boost for the Red Devils and Rangnick has no qualms about playing the contract rebel even though he intends to leave Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer.

There is a feeling that Pogba can still play a key role in United’s battle to finish in the top four this season, with Rangnick even suggesting the former Juventus man could be extra motivated as he looks to earn a new contract elsewhere.

Speaking earlier this month, the United boss said: ‘It’s not a question if a player has an expiring contract, the question is how much does he still want to be a part of this group, how much does he still feel emotionally and physically on board.

‘As long as this is the case, why shouldn’t Paul Pogba now, after two and a half months of injury, fully fit again, and he wants to show the fans of Manchester United, the board, the whole world what kind of player he can be? Even if it’s only to show enough for a new contract elsewhere, he will be highly motivated to do that and why should I then not play him?’
