Osoba and Amuka Set The Tone For NGE Annual Congress In Bayelsa

The 20th edition of the All Nigeria Editors (NGE) Conference kicked off on Thursday 7 November 2024 in Yenagoa.

The three-day conference has the theme: “Economic Growth and Development Strategy in a Resource-Rich Country”.

It has as sub-theme “Good Practices for Viable/Sustainable Media Financing”

President Bola Tinubu,is being represented as a special guest of honour by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.

The event is taking place at the DSP Diepreye Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall.

The generalissimo of Nigerian journalists and former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, the founder of Vanguard Media Group, Chief Sam Amuka, were among the Chairman of ThisDay/Arise Media Group, Prince Nduka Obiagbena are actively participating at the conference.

At the opening ceremony Chief Osoba expressed satisfaction at the infrastructure development of Bayelsa, and commended the state Gov. Duoye Diri for his efforts of transforming the state.

Osoba however expressed sadness that the Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ was presently passing through ‘third term” crisis ahead of its delegates conference where its members would elect new leaders.

He called on the Nigerian Guild of Editors to intervene so as to restore normalcy to the union.

Former Governor Osoba said the face-off among members of the Nigeria of NUJ, had attracted litigation from aggrieved members challenging extension of tenure of the outgoing administration

“It is high time the editors rise up to the challenges to find lasting solution”.Chief Osoba declared.

Chief Osoba, therefore, encouraged NGE on need to set up a committee to adjudicate in the matter “before the situation gets out of hands”.

‘I want to appeal to Nigeria Guild of Editors to look into the ongoing crisis within the Nigeria Union of Journalists. There has been a court challenge on the tenure extension of the President tenure ahead of the conference of the union’, he declared.

In his goodwill message, Amuka said the business side of newspaper ‘us dead’ due to high cost of production, general economic challenge in Nigeria and advent of the internet, among other factors.

He said newspaper producers must do their best to survive under this excruciating situation.

The publisher appealed to the Federal Government to reduce the cost of newsprint, among other interventions, to save newspaper business from dying.

Amuka said Nigerians generally were going through hard times, urging the Federal Government to do more to reduce the suffering of the masses.

In his remarks, Osoba expressed satisfaction at the infrastructure development of Bayelsa, and commended the state Gov. Duoye Diri for efforts to advance the state.

The opening session was chaired by Prince Obiagbena.
