Now that the three major parties have chosen their running mates as the closing date for substitution of names was on Tuesday 18 August 2020.
This is how the setup looks like.Akeredolu of APC from Ondo North has chosen Lucky Aiyedatiwa from Ondo South .Jegede of PDP from Ondo Central is teaming up with a House of Representatives member Hon lkengboju Gboluga also from Ondo South.Ajayi Agboola of ZLP from Ondo South went for a running mate Hon Adegbenro from Ondo Central.
How will this play out as the 3 senatorial districts now have a major candidate.South has been clamoring it’s their turn to produce the governor as Dr Segun Agagu spent only 6 years.Central through Dr Segun Mimiko has spent 8 years.l believe he pushed his luck too far trying to impose Jegede from Central as Governor in 2016.The North is now on its 8th year through Adefarati and Akeredolu’s first term.Akeredolu has the power of incumbency to his advantage and of course federal might.
The recent reconciliatory moves with his party’s co contestants if genuine is a plus for him.Ajayi the incumbent deputy governor has shown he is a no push over,a thorough breed politician and grassroot mobilizer. Most governors find disposing of their deputies as a piece of cake.Kogi state was the latest just before the last general elections.Ajayi has proved too hard a nut to crack. His performance at the PDP primaries where he came 2nd within one month of joining the party made him become the toast of ZLP.Jegede from the way the PDP Governors and the party’s NWC were advising him to choose Ajayi as running mate would have made him the front runner.Unfortunately his choice of running mate has made some PDP bigwigs turn their backs on him.Especially his co contestants.
They have lost faith in him.The APC and ZLP are reportedly having talks with Banji Okunomo and the immediate past SW zonal chairman of PDP Dr Eddy Olafeso to collapse their structures into their parties.
Midnight strategic meeting are taking place in hotels in Alagbaka.PDP’s loss might be APC and ZLP’s gain.Jegede has stated he doesn’t trust anyone outside his political camp. For him it’s a winner takes all.Now he has to contend with Mimiko and the deputy governorship candidate of the ZLP for the central votes. It’s going to be the clash of political titans and lawyers.
There seems to be similarities between the Ondo elections and the recent NBA elections.2 SANs and a junior lawyer. This is the scenario with the Ondo elections. Some political loyalists are saying the NBA precedence is possible.Others say many other factors will determine the outcome. When campaigns start where the pendulum will swing will become clearer.
