An Olympics commentator has been sacked ‘with immediate effect’ after making a sexist remark about Australia’s women swimmers.

Eurosport commentator Bob Ballard came under fire on social media after saying women like ‘hanging around doing their make-up’.

Ballard made the comment shortly after Australia quartet Emma McKeon, Shayna Jack, Mollie O’Callaghan and Meg Harris secured freestyle relay gold in the pool.

‘Well, the women just finishing up,’ said Ballard, who has previously covered sports events for BBC Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT. ‘You know what women are like… hanging around, doing their make-up.’

Eurosport co-commentator Lizzie Simmonds describing the comment as ‘outrageous’ and the TV channel have now removed Bamber from further gigs in Paris.

‘During a segment of Eurosport’s coverage last night, commentator Bob Ballard made an inappropriate comment,’ they said in a statement. ‘To that end, he has been removed from our commentary roster with immediate effect.’
