France forward Olivier Giroud couldn’t hide his anger after being subbed in the first half of the side’s World Cup final against Argentina.
Didier Deschamps made the bold decision to take off Giroud and Ousmane Dembele just 41 minutes into France’s clash against the Argentines.
Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria scored to put Argentina 2-0 up at the half-hour mark and France didn’t have a single shot on target during the first half, nor a touch in the opposition area.
A virus had spread through the France squad in the days leading up to the final and there was certainly a lack of energy throughout the team as Argentina took hold.
Giroud was a doubt to start the match with a knee injury but he passed a late fitness test and had hoped to add to his tally for the tournament.
But the former Chelsea and Arsenal forward was a victim of his side’s shocking first half display when he was substituted shortly before half-time.
Dembele gave away the penalty that gifted Messi the opener and he appeared to accept Deschamps’ decision.
But Giroud, somewhat understandably, angrily threw his water bottle onto the floor and then launched his jacket into the technical area as he digested Deschamps’ decision.
