The 28-year-old’s future appeared to lie away from Old Trafford when he joined West Ham on loan back in January, but after a successful spell in east London he was offered the chance to salvage his United career.
Lingard has been used only sparingly by Solskjaer so far this season, however, and although he has impressed whenever called upon he has still found it hard to cement a regular first team place.
The return to full fitness of Marcus Rashford will only increase the competition for places and with little more than six months left on his current deal, Lingard has been linked with various clubs of the course of the last month.
Newcastle have emerged as serious contenders following the completion of their takeover, while European giants AC Milan and Barcelona are now said to be monitoring his situation.
Addressing Lingard’s future ahead of Saturday’s Premier League match against Leicester City, Solskjaer said: ‘Jesse’s had a good start to the season, of course, he’s come on and scored a few goals for us that’s been very important for us.
‘We want to prolong his contract, we see him as an important player for us, it’s up to him maybe up to me to give him more playing time because he deserves to.
‘Hopefully, we can get a deal sorted for Jesse because we really rate him.’
On the likelihood of the returning Rashford being involved against the Foxes, meanwhile, he added: “He’s in the squad, if he’s gonna start or not, I can’t tell you now. He’s worked really hard throughout the lay-off.
‘He’s been really bright this week and had a 60-min involvement behind closed doors last week, so he’s raring to go.’
