The Federal Government has pledged to address the concerns of Ogoni community over the environmental remediation of oil spill sites by the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) in the area.
A press statement from the Director of Press, Federal Ministry of Environment, Saghir el Mohammed disclosed this.
The Minister of State for Environment, Sharon Ikeazor gave the assurance when she addressed community leaders, youths, women groups and other stakeholders in Ogoni at a forum held in Bori, Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Ikeazor said the meeting was to interact with the community to find out the areas of the project which needs improvement to better deliver on the mandate given to the mediation team.
“I know we are behind schedule in some key areas, and I appreciate the concerns you raised here today about the project as this will help us to work together to fast track the process taking into consideration benefits to the communities.”
“We want to work with the youths and women groups to acquire the skills and be empowered for a sustainable living so that we would not be doing this over and over again”.
Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Prof. Philip Shekwolo briefed the stakeholders on the remediation process, provision of potable water, and livelihood training programs, among others.
