Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has harshly criticized the blanket closure of markets around the Onitsha Head Bridge, describing it as a “misguided enforcement strategy that amounts to economic sabotage.”
In a recent social media post, Obi reiterated his call for the immediate reopening of markets in the state that are not involved in illegal drug trading. He argued that the closures are a significant contributor to Nigeria’s economic stagnation and unproductivity.
Obi asserted that individuals who lack experience in building and managing businesses are making decisions that “inevitably cripple legitimate enterprises and stifle economic growth.” He contrasted this with his own tenure as Governor, where he prioritized supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Drawing from his recent visit to Indonesia, Obi highlighted that over 90% of employment in the country is generated by MSMEs, emphasizing that a government that understands the critical role of small businesses can boost a more productive economy.
Recounting his efforts as Governor, Obi recalled securing a partnership with the Bank of Industry to provide special loans for MSMEs and resisting blanket bans on okada riders, recognizing the severe economic implications for small businesses.
Obi criticized the “indiscriminate shutdown of entire markets,” specifically noting the closure of the Ogbo Ogwu market and its surrounding areas as a flawed strategy. He warned that such closures, even for a short period, can “cripple businesses that rely on daily profits, leading to substantial losses, particularly when perishable goods expire before reopening.”
Concluding his message, Obi expressed optimism for a “new Nigeria” and urged policymakers to protect and nurture small businesses to build a more vibrant, productive nation.
