Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, has advised some Lagos street boys popularly known as “area boys” brought to him by a renowned female talking drummer, Aralola Olamuyiwa, for mentorship to rediscover themselves.
The renowned female talking drummer, popularly known as Ara, took some repentant area boys and girls to Obasanjo’s penthouse residence, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The project was facilitated through the support of the Lagos State Government on the project tagged ‘Eko Inspire Me’ with a view to taking the beneficiaries off the streets.
The area boys and girls in the mentoring session told the former president some of the challenges they were facing.
While advising them, Obasanjo told the beneficiaries how he had faced tough challenges at different times before getting to the top and that God didn’t create them as street boys or girls. He said they would need to rediscover themselves.
He said, “God has not created them as street boys and girls. That’s the first thing.
“Secondly, as we have heard from them, they also knew when something snapped in their lives and what went wrong. So the process of rediscovering themselves has started within them.”
The female drummer thanked the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for supporting the project.
“Gradually, we hope we will be able to take them off the streets. We also want to engage and empower them,” she added.
One of the mentees, Precilia Ogba said, “I did not believe in my life that I am going to set my eyes on our former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. Even taking a picture with him is a privilege and a miracle.”
