AKURE – In a significant decision, the Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organization, Afenifere, has nominated Oba Oladipo Olaitan as the successor to the late Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who passed away at the age of 97. This announcement was made following the group’s regular monthly General Meeting held on February 25, 2025, at the home of the late leader in Isanya-Ogbo, Ogun State.

The communique, jointly signed by Chief Sola Ebiseni and Justice Faloye, emphasized that Oba Olaitan will serve in an acting capacity until the final burial of Chief Adebanjo. The meeting was attended by delegates from six South West states, Kogi, Kwara, and the Itsekiri of Delta State, who collectively acknowledged the late leader’s significant contributions to nation-building.

During the meeting, the delegates expressed their condolences to the family of the late Chief Adebanjo, commending them for their gracious engagement with the numerous visitors paying their respects. They also celebrated the legacy of Chief Adebanjo, whose passing was mourned by many across Nigeria and beyond.

Oba Olaitan, who has been a member of Afenifere for over 45 years, has held various positions within the organization, including National Financial Secretary and Deputy Leader. In his acceptance speech, he reaffirmed his commitment to the ideals of Afenifere, focusing on restructuring and true federalism, and pledged to foster unity within the organization.

In addition to the leadership transition, Afenifere voiced concerns over the escalating kidnapping incidents affecting Ondo and Kogi states. The group urged the governors of both states and relevant security agencies to take immediate action to address this pressing issue, highlighting the case of Prince Eniola Ojajuni, whose kidnapping ordeal has garnered significant media attention.

The meeting included prominent figures such as Senator Femi Okunrounmu, Senator Gbenga Kaka, and former Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Pekun Awobona, among others.

This strategic appointment and the urgent call for action against insecurity underscore Afenifere’s continued commitment to the welfare of the Yoruba people and the broader Nigerian society.
