OAU to graduate 5,852 students, 130 bag first class

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has said 5,852 students from various fields would graduate at the 46th Convocation of the university.

Out of the number, 4,114 are Bachelor degree graduates in the classified category.

This was disclosed by the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Simeon Bamire, during a pre-convocation press briefing held at the campus of the institution on Monday.

Bamire, while giving classes of grades obtained by the students, said 130 would bag first class, as 1,323 others made second class (Honours, Upper Division).

According to him, 1,991 others would graduate with second class (Honours, Lower Division), while 636 would graduate with third class (Honours).

He said, “For this year’s convocation, we have a total number of 5,852 graduands, with the following breakdown; In Bachelor Degrees, classified, we have 130 in First Class (Honours), while 1,323 made second class (Honours, Upper Division).

“In the second class (Honours, Lower division) we have 1,991 graduands and in the third class (Honours) category, we have 636 while 34 graduands are on a pass category. In all, we have 4,114 graduands in this Bachelor degrees, classified.

“However, in the Bachelor degrees, unclassified, which comprises graduands from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, Faculty of Clinical Sciences and, of course, Faculty of Dentistry. Even graduands from our centre for Distance Learning also fall within this category. In this group, we have seven graduands who have Pass with Honours, while 28 fall within Pass with Distinction. 444 made it under Pass with Credit and 486 are with Pass. These make us to have 965 under this unclassified category.

“For the postgraduate graduands, we have 17 under postgraduate Diploma, 403 under Professional Masters and 200 under Master with Research Thesis. While we have 20 under Masters of Philosophy, the total number of our Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) graduands is 61. In all, we have 712 graduands under this category.”

He added that the institution placed a high premium on the welfare and success of its students, hence the urgency in releasing the students, whose results had been approved by the University Senate after suspension of the strike embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
