Kate Garraway proudly showed off her National Television Award on Good Morning Britain, after winning big last night.

The 54-year-old took home the trophy for authored documentary, for her special programme on husband Derek Draper’s devastating battle with coronavirus.

She was visibly emotional on stage as she accepted the award for Finding Derek, which aired earlier this year on ITV.

And Kate made sure to bring her gong on set on GMB this morning, showing it to her co-host, Martin Lewis.

‘Thank you so much to everybody for voting,’ she told viewers. ‘Thank you so much indeed, it means everything.

‘As I said last night, this is for everyone really, because I think the reason why perhaps it did do well is because everyone’s had a slice, haven’t we? Everyone has a Derek in their life, or a Billy or a Darcey, or have lost someone or is mourning.

‘Hopefully this is for everybody that’s been going through the pandemic. Let’s all keep going, and keep celebrating the joy of things.

‘He was struck down by Covid-19. He is free of the virus and has been for a long time, but the damage that was inflicted [on] his organs and his body, from the top of his head to the tip of his toes, means that even though he’s still with us and now at home, the recovery is very, very slow and you just feel him fighting to try.

‘It has been very, very tough and of course it was bittersweet last night because he wasn’t well enough to come.’

Derek was hospitalised with coronavirus last March, and placed into an induced coma shortly after, with the condition having an awful impact on his entire body.

He returned home this April, with cameras on hand to follow his every move for the ITV documentary, which became the broadcaster’s most watched factual programme in years.

Kate was shown a video of her emotional speech on stage on GMB, and insisted that she meant every word of it ‘from the heart’.

She explained that she had spent the night in a hotel after the bash, held at the O2, so that she could get some much-needed sleep before being on our screens early this morning – which meant she hasn’t been able to celebrate with Derek in person.

However, her daughter was on hand to get him on FaceTime so that they could share the joyous moment together.

‘She woke him up and he was a bit bewildered, but he definitely knows,’ she continued.

‘He was so happy, I think you can see it in his eyes. I think he was very happy that I was happy, and it was just lovely to be able to share that.

‘So thank you very much.’

Good Morning Britain continues on weekdays at 6am, on ITV.
