The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education, Professor Paul Awo Nwobasi has stated that the era of non-promotion of teachers will soon be a thing of the past in the state.

The Commissioner stated this in Abakaliki during a 5-day training workshop for Head Teachers, Education officers and Principals of Junior Secondary Schools in Nigeria.

Nwobasi stressed that the present administration in the state has prioritized education to hasten the all-round development of the state.

The event which was powered by the Universal Basic Education Commission, UBEC, Abuja, in conjunction with the National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration, NIEPA – Nigeria, Ondo, and the Ministry of Education, Ebonyi State, had the theme: “Effective School Management in the 21st Century.”

He called on the participants to take the workshop seriously as there was a need for teachers in the state to be innovative, creative and modernistic in their approach towards impacting knowledge to those under them, especially Students.

He said: “I want to thank the teachers who have thought it necessary to be here. Thank you NIEPA for coming here to train the people. All hands must be on deck for us to know what we are to do. We need to catch up with other countries. The Governor wants Education to move forward.

“Education is the gear that propels development in various sectors. The present administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru has given incentives to teachers while your promotions are being worked on. A situation whereby a teacher will work for 11 years without being promoted will soon become a thing of the past.

“I want to urge the participants to do their jobs diligently as more workshops are being planned. We are going to maintain sustainable collaboration with NIEPA.”

In a welcome address, the Acting Director General of NIEPA, Dr. Samson O. Oyeromi who appreciated the participants for turning up for the workshop stressed the need for teachers and Principals to be equipped with the relevant skills needed in the 21st Century.

“We need to be equipped with the right skills in the 21st Century. We are here because we want improvement in our schools. The effect of the training is to inject new skills into the participants. Put what you learn into practice. I appreciate the Commissioner for his contributions towards the success of this workshop.”

Speaking on the relevance of the Workshop, a facilitator, Mrs Folajogwu Akinkuowo who represented the Head, Training and Research, NIEPA, noted that the workshop was also held simultaneously in the Southeast and South-South geopolitical zone of the Country.

“This is the second phase of the workshop. It is happening in the South East and South-South zone. In the course of the workshop, we looked at various areas including instructional leadership, climate change and record and stress management.”

In a goodwill message, the Chairman of UBEB, Ebonyi State, Patience Ogodo represented by Chief Paul Nnana appreciated NIEPA for collaborating with the Ministry of Education to organise the workshop as it will help to improve the effective management of Schools across the State.

She called on the participants to take what they have learned seriously so that they can reproduce the same in their various places of primary assignment.

Abia teachers and principals were also part of the training workshop.
