The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, has called on the Federal Government to ensure policy consistency in the education sector.
This is as he cited the recent HND/BSC dichotomy challenge as a result of policy inconsistency.
Ajaero made this call at the 2024 International Teachers Day event in Abuja on Friday, organised by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, stressing the need to revisit education policies and consider education as self-sufficient.
He emphasized the importance of technical education, stating that HND should not be removed, tasking the Ministry of Education with adequate budgeting to develop facilities and ensure job security.
The NLC boss pledged to support the union in demanding better welfare for teachers nationwide.
While expressing dissatisfaction with the N40,000 minimum wage for civil servants, Ajaero advocated for a wage that covered basic needs.
“We need a wage that will help everyone pay their bills,” he said.
To achieve this, Ajaero recommended that COEASU collaborate with the Ministry to secure a better budget from the National Assembly.
He further appealed to the Ministry to address the concerns raised by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and honour the agreement signed to prevent strikes.
