Nine persons have perished in a fatal auto crash in Ilorin which occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
The victims whose bus was said to be carrying fuel in Jerry cans were burnt beyond recognition, Newspot reports.
The crash occurred in front of Ilorin Airport along Ilorin – Eyenkorin road, according to the Sector Commander, FRSC Kwara sector command, Corps Commander Jonathan Owoade, whose Officers and men carried out the rescue operation at the scene of the accident.
He said the crash occurred at about 0800hrs, involving a Toyota Hiace Bus with registration number AFN 06 YL and a Toyota Corolla saloon car marked LRN 787 FE with 17 people involved.
An eyewitness account disclosed that “the Toyota saloon car was driving out of the Airport while the Lagos bound Hiace Bus was on top speed along the expressway.
“The bus collided with the car resulting in loss of control and it landed sideways in the middle of the road, the bus went up in flames immediately.”
He said, “a total of nine people comprising eight women and one man got burnt beyond recognition while five men sustained various degrees of injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Ilorin General Hospital, while three men inside the saloon car escaped uninjured.
The burnt victims, he added, have been deposited at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.
The sector Commander observed that the crash was avoidable and warned the motoring public against reckless driving and avoiding keeping PMS inside jerricans while on a journey.
He appreciated the Kwara State ambulance services for the release of ambulances as a backup.
The Sector Commander commiserated with the families of the victims and assured the public that the corps will continue to strive hard towards ensuring that such unfortunate incidents are curtailed on our roads.
