Nigerians Gather in Ilorin to Celebrate Prof. Is-haq Oloyede @ 70

A vibrant assembly of academics, industry leaders, government officials, and traditional rulers came together in Ilorin to honor Prof. Is-haq Oloyede during the presentation of two significant books: Islamic Scholarship and Service to Society: A Festschrift for Is-haq Olaranwaju Oloyede and Glimpses into Giant: A Tapestry of Tributes to Prof. Is-haq Olaranwaju Oloyede at 70. The event took place on Thursday, October 10, 2024, at the main auditorium of the University of Ilorin.

 

Organized by the KU8+ consortium of universities in Kwara, the occasion celebrated Prof. Oloyede’s remarkable career as he retires from his role at the University of Ilorin, where he served as its eighth Vice-Chancellor. Over the course of more than four decades, Prof. Oloyede has made significant contributions to academia and beyond, and the event was a heartfelt tribute to his legacy.

 

One of the books presented during the event feature 70 chapters of exceptional tributes from a diverse array of authors across various sectors, showcasing the profound impact Prof. Oloyede has had on countless lives.

Dignitaries took turns extolling Prof. Oloyede’s outstanding qualities. Chief Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, chaired the occasion. He expressed gratitude for Prof. Oloyede’s life and contributions, stating, “You have created an impact that will outlive you.” He emphasized the importance of integrity, patriotism, transparency, and articulation in leadership—qualities that he believes Prof. Oloyede embodies in abundance. He also praised the editors of the two books, noting that these publications would serve as valuable resources for mentoring future generations.

 

Messages of goodwill poured in from distinguished personalities, including representatives of the University of Ilorin’s alumni, who pledged to establish a hostel in Prof. Oloyede’s name and set aside funds for awards to the best graduating students in various fields.

 

Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, representing the Governor of Ogun State, highlighted Prof. Oloyede’s numerous achievements and encouraged him to write a memoir to inspire others through his experiences. Prof. Sheu Adaramaji, Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Universal Basic Education Board, lauded Prof. Oloyede for transforming the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) into a model of transparency and efficiency. He asserted that one does not need to be a friend of Prof. Oloyede to appreciate his contributions, emphasizing that education and ethical values are essential for the success of young people.
