A Nigerian business owner, with the handle @TspicesKitchen on Instagram has sought the advice of netizens on how to manage an employee who experiences pain during her monthly period.
She wrote;
Guys, pls do women in your corporate workplace get days off every month for menstrual pain?
I’m asking because an employee has been taking time off monthly for this reason
She even mentioned that she’ll notify me in advance when her period is approaching so that she can prepare for it”
A user, @solacea_Otiotio replied to her question, that it was unfair to ask others, because people’s situations are different and while it might be happening to her employee, it might not be an issue with others.
The reply;
“Also, asking this question is unfair bc whether or not it happens elsewhere is immaterial. Humane workplaces is world standard”
The @TspicesKitchen responded to the user, stating the reasons why she had asked in the first place.
Her response;
“I’m asking because I need to find a better way to handle this…balancing her health concerns and also considering the needs of the business”
The lady’s question has generated varying reactions online, with many sharing their opinions about the issues based on their personal experiences.

@ganiyat_majob Menstrual cramps can be really painful for some people though.
@_vinnawills As a business owner I’d suggest you run your business as you deem fit, coz for some, they probably don’t have any employee who’s period comes with severe aches or cramps, but you do, so in this case, if the employee is great at her job, punctual/regular every other day, then I see no reason why you shouldn’t grant her this time period leaves, but still do you.
@jay_ni_fah Lol a lady asking this is funny… if you can’t cope with it you can let her go, some people battle with their lives on their periods. It is also okay to prioritize your business, so if it affects your business let her go.
@jennyagrees In my company, I give it. 3 days COMPULSORY paid leave for this reason. They’re not as productive during this time, mood swings that create a tense workplace, disrupt the existing work culture & their performances are not optimal. Why force them to be around?
@thefixerlawyer Maybe her periods are cruel, please oblige her if she brings value to the workplace and truancy isn’t her tradition.
