The 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina has called on journalists to lend their support in the fight against insurgency and other security challenges in the state.
The Brigade Commander, Brig.-Gen. Babatunde Omopariola, made the appeal during a luncheon with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Katsina.
The event was aimed at fostering stronger collaboration between the military and the media in addressing the region’s pressing security concerns.
“Developmental journalism should be prioritized to effectively tackle the lingering insecurity,” said Brig.-Gen. Omopariola.
“The media plays an ever-increasing role in shaping public opinion and influencing military operations. By working together, we can galvanize public support as we progress into the information age.”
Highlighting the importance of collaboration, the commander suggested embedding journalists in the planning and execution of military operations to curb misinformation and promote accurate reporting.
“This will help greatly in checking negative reports about the activities of security agencies. It also provides a platform to strengthen the military’s friendship with the media and bridge the existing divide between us,” he added.
Brig.-Gen. Omopariola also urged journalists to uphold patriotism in their reporting and to avoid content that could harm national security.
In response, the Chairman of the NUJ Katsina State Council, Tukur Den-Ali, expressed gratitude for the warm reception by the brigade.
He reaffirmed the commitment of journalists in the state to support the military’s efforts.
“We promise to always respond to the brigade’s calls and provide media expertise whenever needed. Journalists in Katsina will continue to partner with the brigade and other security agencies to promote interagency cooperation and national security,” Den-Ali said.
