Two senior military officers lost their lives while on an operation to eliminate several terrorists in the remote village of Kogi-Kura in Borno State.
The Nigerian Army which confirmed the deaths said the clash occurred during a clearance mission aimed at rooting out remnants of the terror group from the region. It added that the operation was successful.
A military spokesperson, narrated how the troops engaged the insurgents in a firefight, eliminated several fighters and recovered weapons and equipment.
Unfortunately, he went further that during the encounter, we lost two brave officers who led from the front. “Their sacrifice will not be in vain,”
He said the troops had stormed the village based on credible intelligence indicated the presence of a Boko Haram camp. During the operation, multiple terrorists were neutralized, and some makeshift structures used by the insurgents were destroyed.
A senior military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the identities of the fallen officers as a major and a captain from a special operations unit.
These men were some of our finest. Their courage and leadership inspired the troops, even in the heat of battle, the source added.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating terrorism in the northeast. The fight continues until all criminal elements threatening our country’s peace are eliminated, the military emphasized.
This latest success comes amid continued efforts by the military to restore stability to the troubled region, which has seen over a decade of insurgency.
We will not be deterred by these losses. Our resolve remains firm, the spokesperson concluded.
