The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has refuted claims that a visually impaired officer was among the newly recruited constables.

In a statement issued on Tuesday on it’s official X handle, the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that the officer in question had originally joined the police in full physical health, meeting all necessary recruitment criteria. However, he later lost his sight due to a gunshot wound sustained in the line of duty.

The statement emphasized that the officer was not part of the recent batch of recruits, countering misinformation circulating on social media.

“The Nigeria Police Force is aware of social media rumors suggesting that a Police Constable, allegedly among the newly passed-out recruits, is visually impaired and, therefore, unfit for service. We wish to clarify that this officer was recruited in excellent physical condition, and his current impairment resulted from an unfortunate operational incident two years ago.

“This officer, who met all recruitment requirements at the time of his enlistment, suffered a gunshot injury to his left eye while bravely carrying out his duties. His injury is a testament to the risks officers face in service to their country. Contrary to speculation, he is not a member of the recently graduated constables.

“The Nigeria Police Force upholds strict recruitment and training standards, ensuring that only candidates who meet the required physical and medical criteria are enlisted. This officer’s experience highlights the dedication and sacrifice of our personnel. Throughout his recovery, the Force has provided him with full support to ensure his well-being.

“We urge the public and media to avoid spreading misinformation that could harm the reputation of our officers and the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force. Every member of the Force plays a crucial role in maintaining public safety and security.”
