Nigeria at 60: No commitment to genuine development – CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Kaduna State chapter, has observed that Nigeria at 60 has not really shown commitment for genuine development in all spheres of life.

“We are still burying our citizens because of bad roads, others are being buried on a daily basis as a result of the activities of Boko Haram, kidnapping, banditry, Fulani/farmer clashes and many other vices that have made the lives of Nigerians most vulnerable,” CAN State chairman, Rev John Joseph Hayab, said while appraising Nigeria’s 60 years of independence.

Also assessing the activities being carried out in the last 60 years, Rev. Hayab observed, “We have poor leadership, using nepotism in appointments and elections to offices.

“Our foreign policies not consistent with current realities. Nations having bilateral relationship with us are not sure what we will say or do tomorrow.”

He lamented that unemployment had risen to a terrifying level, with graduates roaming the streets of the country aimlessly thereby becoming vulnerable to all sorts of temptations in the society.

Unfortunately, he noted that “leaders at all levels of government have woefully failed on their mandate to show true commitment to the welfare of the people,” adding that “they are governing without accountability while followers are living in a state of discontentment.”

“We have been praying for Nigeria but we must back our prayers with action. No nation has ever developed just by having many people praying but by having many people doing what is right,” he explained.

The state CAN chairman stressed the need for the leadership in the country to raise to the welfare of the people by ensuring their protection and carrying all along in all spheres of life devoid of any segregation.

Nigeria at 60, he said, should by now shown some levels of seriousness on the path of self reliant, adding, “we have all these years never seen any serious commitment in the leadership of the country to take Nigerians to the next level.”
