NIGERIA AND FUN-FAIR TRAGEDIES By Jide Oguntoye

It would appear as if Nigeria is different from the rest of the world with the repeated cases of stampedes and resultant casualities recorded along with them in the nation in recent times!

Save our souls would appear to be the consequent song the patriotic Nigerians should raise their voices to sing to the rest of the world!!!

Yet, Nigerians are not less human than the citizens of the other nations of the world, one haven visited and witnessed crowd-control methods in foreign lands.

One thinks that the peaceful methods adopted in such foreign lands are not supposed to be impossible in Nigeria or other nations, developed or under-developed, in Africa or outside Africa.

After all, we all feel happy or sad equally as situations demand.

To avoid the type of Fun-Fair tragedy just recorded in Oyo State, Nigeria or elsewhere our standard venue for such henceforth should be very solid, permanent structures, on open fields, to house the fun gifts and the organizers.

Such structures should have an open, very strong enough narrow, zig-zag, line-up steal structure or structures long enough to contain up to 20 beneficiaries at a time.

In such an arrangement, canopy or canopies would be on standby for the naturally expectant, eager prospective beneficiaries who, meanwhile, should be able to relax under a canopy or canopies, listening (attentively or not) to good music, taking interests in hawkers of goods and menu items while also watching the zig-zag line-up take shape in an orderly manner.

Law-enforcement agents would have been on standby, of course, in a number that would not be overwhelmed by hungry and angry miscreants; they would usher in visitors and stay close to the line-up as well as the out-lets to ensure that miscreants don’t go and return to play the Oliver Twist!

If you doubt the fact that miscreants exist everywhere why do you think there are law-enforcement agents everywhere?

The zig-zag line-up would naturally, gradually diminish while discussions, interactions, buying and selling would go on freely under the canopy or canopies until the Fun-Fair gifts are exhausted and the programme is formally closed peacefully!

That way, tragedy would have been avoided to God’s glory!

No magic wand theory about it and being Nigerians, Africans, Asians or Europeans have absolutely nothing to do with it!!!

Nothing of the type of the recent funfair tragedies would happen in my nation again, I pray; to God and to the Nigerian leaders, particularly the governors who receive monthly allocations which were supposed to be spent to make Nigerians happy and secured.
