The Niger State Government, in its bid to forestall incessant boat mishaps and loss of lives, has presented five metal fifty- seater boats to riverine communities in the state.
The governor’s Special Adviser on Digital Media and Strategy, Abdullberqy Usman Ebbo, stated this on his X handle.
Ebbo disclosed that the Niger State Community and Social Development Agency, CSDA, delivered the boats to Wuye community of Gbako as part of Governor Umaru Bago’s initiative to ensure safer inland water transportation, support agricultural activities, and enhance the safety of residents.
According to him, the General Manager of CSDA, Aisha Abdulkadir, said the communities around the area had requested for the intervention due to the dangers posed by wooden boats previously used that were prone to damage and not durable on water.
He explained: “During the handover of the operational code to LG chairmen, the Commissioner for Transport, Hadiza Kuta, noted the importance of enforcing water travel regulations while warning that violators would face prosecution.”
Ebbo further stated: “Some of the benefiting communities’ representatives appreciated Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s foresight aimed at curbing future boat mishap in the state.”
Newspot recalls that over 100 people from the state died in a recent boat mishap at Gbajibo community in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
