Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has performed the groundbreaking ceremony of 118 km road projects in Kontagora, Kontagora Local Government Area of the state as part of the urban renewal policy of his administration.
The road projects include reconstruction of the 90 km Kontagora-Rijau Road, construction of the 19.4 km Kontagora Western bypass ring road as well as the 8.7 km Kontagora Eastern bypass ring road in the area.
The Kontagora-Rijau Road reconstruction is to be carried out by Triacta Nigeria Ltd while the Western and Eastern bypass ring roads are to be constructed by Brosini Nigeria Ltd.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony in Kontagora, Bago revealed that his administration is so far working on 1,000 km of road projects across the state out of which 400 km are federal roads.
” Our administration is aware of the rapid development road constructions engenders in the society and is also concerned about the safety of road users. It is on that note that we decided to embark on road projects to ameliorate the sufferings of citizens plying the roads, ” he noted.
The governor also disclosed that aside from receiving the approval from the federal government for the reconstruction of the 90 km Kontagora-Rijau Road, the state also secured approval for the reconstruction of the 41 km dualisation of the Kakkaki-Minna Road as well as 91 km Rofia-Borgu Road which are all federal roads.
Bago noted that with good road infrastructure in Kontagora LGA, being central in Niger North senatorial district and a centre of commerce, there will be ease of movement of goods to other places.
He added that the contractors handling the projects were carefully selected based on their track records and would be put on their toes to deliver standard projects.
In their separate remarks, the senator representing Niger North and former Niger State Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello and the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, AbdulMalik Sarkin Daji, both commended the governor on his urban renewal policy, saying the road projects will open up Kontagora town for development.
Also, the Commissioner for Works, Suleiman Umar, said the road project embarked upon by Governor Bago are part of his plans to make Niger State one of the most economically viable states in Nigeria and by extension, reduce hardship faced by commuters.
Similarly, the Emir of Kontagora, Muhammad Barau Mu’azu II, observed that the road projects will facilitate growth and development within the local governments under the Kontagora Emirate and improve supply chain as well as domestic needs.
