A pro-democracy group in Katsina State took to the streets on Sunday to demand the immediate release and reinstatement of President Mohammed Bazoum of the Republic of Niger whose administration was toppled by the military on July 26, 2023.

The protesters, under the umbrella of the Coalition of Pro-democracy Activists, marched through Katsina metropolis carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Up ECOWAS,” “No to Coup d’etat in Africa,” “Release Bazoum Now,” and “No to Authoritarianism.”

Addressing newsmen during the rally, the chairperson of the coalition, Bishir Dauda, described the coups as unjustifiable, either in Niger or anywhere else.

The group also condemned in strong terms the arrogance and disrespect exhibited by the coupists towards world leaders and respected individuals who went to broker peace in the Niger crisis.

In the same vein, the pro-democracy group called on the junta to eschew selfish motives and embrace the peace gesture offered by ECOWAS to avoid plunging the region further into needless and unwarranted conflict.
