The Red Devils booked their place in the fifth round with victory over the League Two side but Erik ten Hag’s side were made to work for it and were left sweating after blowing a two-goal lead.
Goals from Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo put United in control but Garnacho selfishly wasted a golden chance to make it 3-0 as Newport battled back to 2-2.
The Argentine should have passed across goal to either Fernandes or Rasmus Hojlund for a simple tap-in but instead decided to go for glory, with his effort smashing into the crossbar and his teammates turning their back in disgust.
Ultimately it did not matter, as second-half goals from Antony and Hojlund secured the win, but Fernandes was not happy with Garnacho after the match.
‘We have to kill the game,’ Fernandes told the BBC. ‘In the first half we hand chances to make 3-0 but because when you get 2-0 in these kinds of games everyone wants to try to score and get their goal, sometimes we don’t get the best decision for the team.’
The United captain added: ‘We wanted to win, we got it. But the result wasn’t the perfect one for us.
‘The first one, it’s a great goal from them. Unbelievable shot. But after we have to be more focused. In the second half we can’t concede another goal and let them have some belief.
‘After we did a great job to close the game. Our chance to win a trophy this season is the FA Cup and we have to give everything to get into the final.
‘To make the season look not as bad as it’s been, we have to try to win this trophy.’
