The 29-year-old was strongly linked with a move to St James’ Park earlier this year, but it did not come to fruition in January or the summer and he has remained a regular in the Atletico Madrid side since, making 18 appearances already this season.
However, Diego Simeone’s side finished bottom of their Champions League group, meaning they will not even be playing in the Europa League after Christmas and Atleti will have to trim their budget accordingly.
Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, reports that Carrasco is likely to be one of the players to be sold, with 18 months left on his contract.
Newcastle will be able to take advantage of the situation in the next transfer window, with Eddie Howe keen on Carrasco’s versatility to play as a wing-back or winger further forward.
Carrasco is set to be in Belgium’s World Cup squad for Qatar and would bring a wealth of experience to St James’ Park, having already picked up 59 caps for his country.
He has won La Liga, alongside Newcastle’s Kieran Trippier, and the Europa League with Atletico Madrid, while also reaching the Champions League final in 2016.
It is yet to be seen whether the Magpies will make another bid for Carrasco, but the report from Spain says they have a ‘clear run’ at the Belgian if they do indeed still want to bring him to St James’ Park.
