A new militant group known as Mahmuda has surfaced,in Nigeria’s
North – Central Region unleashing violence and destabilizing communities near Kainji Lake National Park (KLNP). The group is reported to have killed over 15 vigilantes and villagers in recent attacks, raising fears of a burgeoning insurgency in the area.

A brutal attack targeted a vigilante patrol in Kemaanji, resulting in the deaths of more than 25 members and several villagers.

Sources indicate that Mahmuda operates across multiple communities in Kwara State, including Kemaanji, Tenebo, Baabete, Nuku, and Nanu in Kaiama Local Government Area, as well as villages in Yashikira District of Barutein LGA. The militants have also expanded into Borgu LGA, covering parts of Niger State, specifically in Babana and Wawa districts.

On Wednesday, a brutal attack targeted a vigilante patrol in Kemaanji, resulting in the deaths of more than 15 members and several villagers. Eyewitnesses report that the militants called themselves Mahmuda, with audio recordings allegedly from their leader threatening continued violence against local communities.

Analysts suggest that Mahmuda may be a splinter faction of Boko Haram, possibly breaking away from the Shekau-led extremist group. A recent audiotape from the militants claims to represent a moderate Islamist sect, further fueling concerns over their ideological leanings.
