The Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, NASIEC, has officially scheduled November 2, 2024, for the conduct of Local Government Council elections across the state.

This announcement was made by NASIEC Chairman, Ayuba Wandai Usman, during a meeting with officials from the Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC in Lafia.

Wandai explained that the election date was set following the withdrawal of legal challenges filed in the Makurdi Division of the Appeal Court by Paul John, and 12 others.

The court case had delayed the election process, initially scheduled for August 31, 2024.

With the withdrawal of the appeal on September 26, 2024, NASIEC was cleared to proceed with the election plans.

“You will recall that the Commission conducted the last Local Government Councils Elections on October 6, 2021, with officials sworn in on October 8, 2021, for a three-year tenure ending on October 7, 2024,” the NASIEC Chairman said.

He stated the importance of adhering to the rule of law and explained that NASIEC had earlier postponed the elections indefinitely due to a legal challenge over sections of the Nasarawa State Local Government Election Law, 2018, and the Local Government Councils Elections Guidelines, 2024.

The NASIEC Chairman expressed gratitude to IPAC for its continued support and for fostering a peaceful political environment.

He praised the council’s role in ensuring that local government elections in Nasarawa State have been peaceful and orderly.

“As key stakeholders, the Inter-Party Advisory Council has demonstrated maturity and ensured peace during elections. We count on your continued support as we work toward delivering free, fair, and credible elections,” Wandai concluded.
