Leaders and members of the Bayelsa State chapter of Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, on Monday, grounded government activities in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The labour leaders shut the state and federal secretariats, banks, tertiary institutions and primary and secondary schools.
The union members led by the NLC Chairman, Simon Barnabas, and his TUC, counterpart, Maya Julius, cordoned off the gates and major entrances to the secretariat to effect total compliance.
Newspot gathered that people were turned away at banks and public hospitals in the state as workers complied with the strike.
Addressing the various labour leadership, NLC state Chairman, Simon Barnabas, said the state chapters of all the unions are opposed to any negotiation below the expectations of the national leadership and members.
He said, “What we are even asking for is not up to or can’t even be compared to all the allowances they receive. Why can’t the Federal Government listen to us and approve the said amount, which is not too much for the people that are called the engine room of the country?
For me, which is my own personal suggestion, N545,000 as minimum wage is not bad, so that every worker, even a cleaner, can overcome the difficult times we are in which is occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.*
He commended the workers for their prompt response in coming out to enforce the strike, adding that they may continue on Tuesday.
“We are waiting to get further directives from the national leadership on the way forward,” he noted.
