West Ham striker Michail Antonio has finally been discharged from hospital, three weeks after breaking his leg in a horrific car crash.
Antonio had to be airlifted to a hospital after he was involved in an accident while driving in his Ferrari in Theydon Bois, Essex on December 7.
It took almost an hour for emergency services to free Antonio from his car after he collided with a tree driving home from the club’s Rush Green training ground ahead of their Premier League match against Wolves.
The 34-year-old underwent surgery that same day and after spending Christmas in hospital, the Jamaican international has now returned home.
However, Antonio, whose contract with West Ham expires this summer, is not expected to play again this season.
Following the accident, West Ham raised nearly £60,000 for the NHS and Air Ambulance UK charities by auctioning off signed shirts worn in honour of Antonio ahead of the club’s first game following the crash.
‘It’s been special to see the West Ham family and the wider football community come together in support of Michail over the last month,’ club captain Jarrod Bowen said.
‘We are all grateful for the care that both the NHS and Air Ambulances UK have given to Michail during a challenging time for him and his family, and for what they continue to do every single day for people around the country.
‘Pulling together during difficult times is what being a part of West Ham United is all about and on behalf of the team, I want to thank everyone for helping us to raise an incredible amount of money for two great causes.’
Antonio is West Ham’s all-time Premier League goal scorer and has scored 83 goals in 323 games since signing from Nottingham Forest in 2015.
While his contract expires at the end of the season, West Ham are expected to have talks with the forward about extending his contract while he continues his rehabilitation.
The club did a similar thing for veteran centre-back Angelo Ogbonna, extending the Italian’s contract by one more year after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for therest of the season.
Julen Lopetegui’s side are back in action in the New Year when they visit Manchester City on Saturday, January 4.
