Michael Carrick dedicated Manchester United’s win over Villarreal on Tuesday now to former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who was sacked just two days ago.

Carrick stepped in as caretaker manager, having been a first team coach under Solskjaer, and got his spell in charge off to the perfect start.

After a cagey game for over an hour, Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock with 12 minutes to play, before Jadon Sancho made it 2-0 as the clock ticked to 90.

The results means the Red Devils have qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League and regain some confidence after the woeful 4-1 mauling at the hands of Watford on Saturday which led to Solskjaer’s ousting.

The Norwegian may be gone, but he was still on Carrick’s mind after the win, dedicating the victory to his friend.

‘I have enjoyed it, I’ve really enjoyed it,, the whole thing and the support I’ve had,’ said Carrick of his unlikely experience as a manager.

‘I said to the players, it’s not been an easy couple of days for everyone at the club and I can enjoy it so much but at the same point still, that result feels like it’s for Ole. I can’t get away from that.

‘But without dwelling on it we had a job to do and when I was there and things needed to be taken care of I was happy to do it.

‘Thankfully it all went to plan in the end.’

United’s search for a new manager goes on, with Carrick unlikely to be in charge for much longer despite the improved performance and impressive result.

He will likely be in charge on Sunday afternoon, though, when the Red Devils travel to Chelsea in the Premier League, in an even bigger test of his rookie management career.
