Micah Richards was stunned to hear Manchester City fans booing their team off at half-time against Tottenham on Thursday night, saying: ‘That’s not acceptable.’
The Premier League champions found themselves 2-0 down against Spurs after a frantic end to the first half which saw Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal score in the final minutes of the opening period.
The surprise double clearly stunned the local fans and, possibly still frustrated by defeat to Manchester United at the weekend, they showed their disappointment.
It is a rare sound at the Etihad, but the City fans booed the players in light blue off the pitch, which Richards was not at all impressed by.
‘No, that’s not acceptable,’ Richards told Sky Sports. ‘City have brought joy to them for years now, they’ve won four leagues out of five.
‘You can’t be booing, I’m always with the fans, but you can’t be booing the players after that.’
Whether the booing helped pump up the City players or not, they turned things around spectacularly in the second half and just eight minutes after the break they were level thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland.
The dream first half turned to a nightmare in the second for Spurs when Riyad Mahrez fired past Hugo Lloris just after the hour mark to continue the superb comeback.
