There is an outbreak of measles at the Agagbe Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camp in Gwer West LGA of Benue State with over children affected so far.
The camp manager, Terna Jacob disclosed this to Newspot in Makurdi on Wednesday while giving an update on the situation at the camp.
Jacob said following media reports, two people, among them, a health official from the local government secretariat in Naka visited the camp on Tuesday to assess the situation at the camp.
Jacob said that four additional children were down with measles in the camp and the children were still being treated with local herbs.
According to him, “Yesterday (Tuesday) at about 5.35 PM a man came to IDP camp at Agagbe for updates on the health challenges in IDP camp in Agagbe. He interviewed the woman that gave birth to a dead child and asked where she gave birth. She told him It was in the toilet.
“He asked to be taken there which she did and further asked her whether she attended any hospital for antenatal but she said no because she didn’t have money.
“The man took a picture of her in the toilet and interviewed Medecins Sans Frontieres volunteers
“Also, another health official from the local government secretariat in Naka here came and said he was directed by the state ministry of health to come and assess the situation at the camp.
“He also took pictures and he got ten children affected by measles, five boys and five girls.
The camp manager, Terna Jacob said he earlier informed the public on Monday about the plight of inmates at the IDP camp where he said that six children were down with measles while their parents had resorted to native herbs to treat them due to a lack of health care.
He further informed that pregnant women also made use of toilets as delivery centres as two babies died at birth within two days.
