The former Managing Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company [SPDC], Dr. Mutiu Sunmonu, CON, has been announced as the 3rd substantive Chancellor of McPherson University.
Dr. Sunmonu succeeded Dr. Christopher Kolade who recently concluded his term as the Chancellor of the University.
The new Chancellor who was unveiled during the colorful 7th Convocation Ceremony held on Saturday, November 19, 2022, was equally conferred with an honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Management (Honouris Causa)
The Visitor to the University, Rev. Sam Aboyeji and the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Francis Igbasan, took their turns to extol the virtues of Dr. Sunmonu whom they described as an exemplary Nigerian and a successful Engineer who has paid his dues in his service to his fatherland.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, McU, Engr. Kunle Allen, who was also present at the unveiling, joined the Visitor and the Vice-Chancellor in decorating the new Chancellor with his official regalia before handing the instrument of office to him.
Dr. Sunmonu, who assumed office immediately, is an alumnus of the University of Lagos, Nigeria where he graduated with a First Class degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 1977. He also holds a Master of Business Administration [MBA] from Harvard Business School.
He worked for SPDC for 36 years and also served as the Vice-President, Production for Sub-Saharan Africa where he was saddled with the responsibility of managing the company’s business in countries within the region, including Gabon. He was also responsible for mobilising the private sector to set up the National Business Council for Sustainable Development (NBCSD) among others.
The new award is a Fellow of the Nigeria Society of Engineers (FNSE) and has been honoured with the national award of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2014.
The Chancellor is also the Chairman of Imperial Homes Mortgage Bank Ltd, Chairman, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc., Chairman, Coronation Insurance Plc; Chairman, Alpha Mead Group; Board member, Unilever Nigeria Plc among many others.
