Matt Lucas has joked the fuel crisis is behind the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp outage as everyone tries to cope without checking the social media platforms.

The three major services – which are all run by Facebook – suddenly went down on Monday afternoon and it seems even celebrities get a little bit lost without being able to scroll through their favourite sites.

Great British Bake Off host Matt Lucas was as quick as ever, joking minutes into the outage: ‘Hands up who remembers whatsapp (sic)’

He later referenced the current UK fuel crisis, as he quipped: ‘It seems there is no petrol left to drive your whatsapp message to its destination (sic)’

The former Little Britain star wasn’t the only one to make a similar joke, as Good Morning Britain’s Alex Beresford couldn’t resist his own cheeky comment.

‘Bet the queue to get back on Instagram is longer than the petrol ones,’ he tweeted.

And echoing all our thoughts, he added: ‘When you realise you’ll have to have real conversations with real people in your house if Instagram don’t get its s**t together tonight’.

It’s comforting to know we’re not alone in this, and Piers Morgan clearly wasn’t looking forward to some time away from the platforms as he shared a shocked face emoji in response to the news.

Comedian Rosie Jones took us back to a much simpler time as she wrote: ‘Don’t worry guys, I’ve just checked Myspace and Bebo and they’re still up and running.’

Phew!

While former RuPaul’s Drag Race UK contestant Tia Kofi made us all feel a bit attacked, adding: ‘Instagram is down and my latest post has been showing as 1 like for an hour. My anxiety cannot. Proof that I’m probably too dependent on social media tbh’.

We can definitely relate.

The problems began at around 4.30pm, with nearly 150,000 people reported being unable to access Facebook, Instagram or WhatsApp in the space of just half an hour, according to outage monitor Downdetector.

The three services – which are used by more than 2 billion people each day – are all run by Facebook, which did not explain the outages but apologised and said it was ‘working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible’.

Aspects of the IT infrastructure they are based on have been integrated, meaning that problems are likely to affect all three at once.

People are likely to have difficulty logging into other services they have signed up for using their Facebook logins, such as Spotify and Tinder, while the outages continue.
