Jamaica have offered Mason Greenwood hope of reviving his international football career.

Greenwood, who is currently on loan at Getafe from Manchester United, made one senior appearance for England in September 2020, coming off the bench in a 1-0 victory.

In the days that followed, he and Manchester City star Phil Foden were withdrawn from the squad for breaking Covid quarantine guidelines after leaving the team hotel without permission.

The 22-year-old is eligible to play for Jamaica through his father with The Reggae Boyz head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson revealing he would consider calling him into the side.

‘I don’t think I am different from all coaches in the world. We would like to have the best talent on our teams,’ Hallgrimsson said when asked about Greenwood.

‘If he gets his former fitness and his former level, that level could help Jamaica, and all coaches would want to have good players in their team and we are no different.’

Greenwood was suspended by United in January 2022 after he was arrested and subsequently charged by Manchester Police with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February with United holding their own investigation into his conduct. United were strongly considering reintroducing the striker to the side in the summer before eventually opting to loan the player out to Getafe.

‘Of course, he will come with some baggage, but it is premature to talk about players that are not here,’ Hallgrimsson continued.

‘But whatever happens will happen. I want the best players with the best abilities playing for my team.’

England boss Gareth Southgate was reluctant to discuss the possibility of Greenwood returning to the Three Lions squad in September, noting he was ‘not a consideration’ at that time.

‘It’s clearly a very complex case,’ Southgate said.

‘He’s not playing so it’s not a consideration for us. It’s hypothetical. Whatever I say will be used in a less nuanced fashion frankly.’

Greenwood scored his first goal for Getafe at the weekend. ‘Happy to score my first goal for [Getafe],’ he posted on Instagram after the match. ‘Amazing team spirit to come away from the game with a point.’
