Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg believes Newcastle United’s winning goal against Arsenal should have been ruled out by VAR.

Mikel Arteta called the decision to award Anthony Gordon’s second-half goal atSt James’ Park an ‘embarrassment’ and a ‘disgrace’ after it went through three separate VAR checks.

Arsenal supported Arteta’s comments with a statement on Sunday in which the club slammed ‘unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors’ during their first Premier League defeat this season.

And Clattenburg believes Joelinton’s push on Gabriel Magalhaes should have been enough for referee Stuart Attwell and the VAR team to rule out Newcastle’s goal.

When asked about Joelinton’s push on Gabriel, Clattenburg wrote in his column for MailOnline: ‘The whole goal didn’t feel right and if there was a moment to disallow it then it was this as Joelinton clearly pushed Gabriel.’

Giving his view on the ball potentially going out of play in the build up to Newcastle’s goal, Clattenburg wrote: ‘There wasn’t a camera angle available to the VAR that could have conclusively ruled that the ball was out of play, so the on-field decision has to stand.’

Clattenburg also believes Gordon’s goal should not have been ruled out for offside.

‘This happens a lot where players block the cameras, meaning the VAR couldn’t draw the lines and conclusively rule out the goal for offside. Again, the on-field decision has to stand,’ the former Premier League official wrote.

Clattenburg also feels Attwell made the correct decision by not giving a red card to Kai Havertz for his challenge on Sean Longstaff in the first half.

‘People will watch it in slow-motion and say ‘he’s off the floor’ but there wasn’t enough contact from Havertz to justify a red card,’ Clattenburg wrote.
