The England forward scored from the penalty spot in the 3-0 win at Goodison Park, a game which included Alejandro Garnacho’s unforgettable bicycle kick early on.
There were more important things on Rashford’s mind following the game, though, as he revealed the tragic news of his cousin’s death on Monday night, dedicating his own goal to his departed family member.
Posting on social media, Rashford wrote: ‘I would like to dedicate the goal yesterday to my cousin who recently passed away. GBNF.’
The 26-year-old has had a tough season so far, struggling for form and goals, with the strike against the Toffees just his second in 17 appearances this campaign.
Clearly Rashford has been going through difficulties off the pitch but the goal at Goodison Park could be a turning point for his season.
Bruno Fernandes clearly hopes so, handing Rashford the ball to take the penalty instead of taking it himself.
‘I felt that Marcus needed a bit of confidence, needed goals. Marcus is an excellent penalty-taker too,’ said the Portuguese.
‘I’m 100 per cent sure that he could score the penalty. It’s not about who takes it, it’s about scoring the penalty and Marcus did it perfectly. Obviously strikers, wingers, they want to score goals, they need to score goals, that’s part of their game and it gives you a boost.
‘After the penalty, Marcus was unstoppable – he could take on everyone. I think sometimes you need this chance, this opportunity to get confidence back. But Marcus has been great for us.
‘Obviously last season he was amazing, so everyone’s expectations for this season were higher. It’s just about getting his goals back and everyone will stay say that he is world-class again.’
